Audi SmartTop Roof Control Unit

After a telephone conversation with a customer enquiring after a smart top module for his B7 Audi A4 we booked him in for fitting.

Firstly we need to establish what he wanted the SmarTtop module to do with various options available these include:

One touch operation from inside the car.

Roof being able to be open/closed with engine on/off.

Open and close with vehicle in motion.

Use of original remote to open/ close roof whilst unlocking/locking vehicle.

Programme windows so they stay up/down when roof is open/closed.

Have a chirp feature for when vehicle is locked.

Programme mirrors to dip when vehicle is in reverse.

Undetectable to any diagnostics equipment.

Once this had been decided the next step is to programme the smart top module which is a simple USB lead into the laptop/pc and turn the features off or on according to personal preference.

Next step is to fit the unit to the vehicle. The SmarTtop unit comes with all fixings and connectors as required along with nice clear instructions. On most vehicles the roof control units are easily accessible. This Audi however required removal of inner rear quarter panels which although isn’t a major job does require some due care and attention. Once the smart top has been plugged in and the unit fixed in place you can refit any removed panels and test all the functions work that you have programmed.

I personally leave the USB attached and leave it accessible behind an easily removed panel in case any further programming is required. In this case I left it curled up under the rear seat.
